I started wondering if sugar could be part of the picture. Not just the obvious stuff like cakes, biscuits and fizzy drinks, but the sugar that sneaks into sauces, cereals and even so-called healthy snacks. So I gave it up. Refined sugar. Completely. For 30 days.

Training for a half marathon like the Weymouth Half requires commitment, planning, and structured sessions that gradually build endurance, speed, and confidence. With six months to prepare, you have plenty of time to build a strong foundation, enhance your stamina, and improve your race performance.

This blog provides a detailed 6-month training plan, broken into phases, with example sessions. This plan assumes you have some basic running experience and can comfortably run 3-5 miles.

Key Elements of the Plan

  • 3-4 Running Sessions Per Week: Focused on long runs, speed work, and easy recovery runs.
  • Strength and Cross-Training: Incorporating exercises to prevent injuries and improve overall fitness.
  • Rest and Recovery: Crucial for allowing your body to adapt and strengthen.
  • Gradual Build: Mileage increases progressively to prevent injury and burnout.
  • Tapering: The final weeks will focus on reducing intensity to ensure you’re fresh for race day.

  • Cross-Training: 1-2 sessions (swimming, cycling, yoga)
  • Strength Training: 1 session (focus on legs, core, and hips)

Example Week 1:

  • Tuesday: 3-mile easy run
  • Thursday: 4-mile steady run
  • Saturday: 5-mile long run at a conversational pace
  • Sunday: Cross-training (cycling or swimming)

Progression:

  • Increase the long run by 0.5-1 mile per week, aiming to reach 8-9 miles by the end of November. Keep weekday runs consistent in distance but slowly increase intensity.

Endurance Growth Phase (December – January)

Now that you’ve built a solid base, it’s time to gradually increase mileage and introduce some speed work. This phase will focus on building your aerobic capacity, ensuring you can handle the half marathon distance.

Weekly Schedule:

  • Run Days: 4 (long run, easy run, tempo run, intervals)
  • Cross-Training: 1 session
  • Strength Training: 1 session

Example Week 10 (Early January):

  • Tuesday: 5-mile easy run
  • Thursday: 3-mile tempo run (run the middle mile 15-20 seconds faster than your goal race pace)
  • Saturday: 9-mile long run
  • Sunday: Cross-training (swimming or cycling)
  • Wednesday: Strength training (lunges, squats, planks, bridges)

Speed Work (January introduction):
Introduce interval training to build speed and improve efficiency:

  • Session: 6 x 400m at a hard pace with 90 seconds rest between intervals.
  • Gradually increase to 8 x 400m or 4 x 800m intervals.

Progression:

  • By the end of January, aim for your long run to reach 11-12 miles.
  • Tempo runs can increase in distance up to 5-6 miles total, with 2-3 miles at tempo pace.

Race Preparation Phase (February – Early March)

With two months to go, your focus will shift to refining your race pace, building mental toughness, and practicing running at your goal pace.

Weekly Schedule:

  • Run Days: 4 (including one race-pace session)
  • Cross-Training: 1 session
  • Strength Training: Maintenance work, focusing on mobility and injury prevention.

Example Week 16 (Mid-February):

  • Tuesday: 6-mile easy run
  • Thursday: 6-mile run with 4 miles at goal race pace
  • Saturday: 12-mile long run, practicing fueling and hydration strategy
  • Sunday: Rest or light cross-training

Goal-Pace Runs:
Include a session each week where you run at your desired half marathon pace for 3-5 miles, allowing your body to get accustomed to the effort.

Long Runs:
Maintain long runs at 10-13 miles, simulating race day conditions by practicing nutrition and pacing strategies.

Race Day Simulation (End of February):

  • Session: 13-mile long run, trying to mimic the conditions of the Weymouth Half Marathon. Run the first 10 miles easy and the last 3 miles at your race pace.

Taper Phase (Mid-March)

The final two weeks are about reducing volume to allow your body to recover and feel fresh on race day. You’ll still run but at lower intensity and shorter distances.

Weekly Schedule:

  • Run Days: 3 (shorter runs, focus on staying loose)
  • Cross-Training: Light activities (walking, swimming)
  • Strength Training: Very light, just enough to maintain mobility.

Example Week 22:

  • Tuesday: 4-mile easy run
  • Thursday: 3-mile goal pace run
  • Saturday: 6-mile long run
  • Sunday: Rest

Final Week (Race Week):

  • Keep runs light and short (2-4 miles), focusing on mental preparation and fueling strategies.

Preventing Injuries During Training

Injury prevention should be a priority during training. Here are some key tips:

  • Listen to Your Body: Avoid pushing through sharp or persistent pain.
  • Warm-Up and Cool-Down: Spend 5-10 minutes warming up before runs and cooling down after to prevent muscle tightness.
  • Strength and Mobility Work: Incorporate exercises that strengthen your glutes, hamstrings, and core.
  • Gradual Mileage Increase: Avoid jumping up in mileage too quickly, aiming for no more than a 10% increase per week.
